What it does

Rhythm Typer is a single-purpose tool with one job: turn your keyboard into an instrument. Every key you press plays a note. The faster you type, the faster the music. The words you choose shape the melody — long words create long runs, short punchy ones create staccato bursts.

The notes are drawn from a pentatonic scale — the same five-note foundation used in blues, folk, and most music that feels instinctively good. The practical result is that it's mathematically impossible to hit a bad note. Everything sounds like it belongs. Everything sounds like you meant it.

Why pentatonic?

Most Western music uses a seven-note scale, and within that scale certain combinations of notes create tension or dissonance. The pentatonic scale removes those problem notes entirely, leaving only ones that harmonize with each other.

It's why a child randomly plucking a pentatonic xylophone sounds musical, while random notes on a full piano often don't. Rhythm Typer borrows that same trick. Your typing isn't random — but even if it were, it would still sound right.

How to use it

  • Open the tool and start typing — that's genuinely all there is to it
  • Try typing something slow and deliberate, then something fast — hear how the rhythm shifts
  • Type the same word twice — notice how the melody repeats
  • Hold a key — a sustained note rings out

What people use it for

Mostly nothing. That's the point. Rhythm Typer exists in the category of tools that don't need a use case to justify themselves — they exist to be experienced. People open it, type something, and then type something else, and then something else, and then ten minutes have passed.

That said: some people find it genuinely useful as a focus aid. The gentle audio feedback of typing creates a rhythm that can make long writing sessions feel more meditative. Others use it to decompress — there's something calming about turning stress into sound.

The design decision behind it

The first version of Rhythm Typer used a full chromatic scale — every key mapped to a different pitch. It sounded chaotic. Not unpleasant, but chaotic. The pentatonic constraint wasn't obvious at first; it came from thinking about what makes something feel good to use on a loop.

The lesson: sometimes the most interesting constraint is the one you add voluntarily. Removing options — in this case, certain notes — made the experience richer, not poorer.
